The tree is down and the stump is ground. Now what? Lawn, replanting, landscaping β what works and what doesn't.
The first 2β4 weeks
After stump grinding, the hole is filled with wood chips and soil. The ground will settle over the coming weeks. Don't plant directly into the ground stump area immediately β decomposing wood depletes soil nitrogen temporarily. For lawn, top-dress with soil, oversow, and keep moist.
Replanting after tree removal
The old root system below the stump grinding level continues to decompose. Planting a new tree directly into the old root zone is generally fine β roots decompose and the new tree establishes its own system. Wait 6β12 months for the ground to stabilise if planting a large tree.
Using the wood chip mulch
If we leave wood chips on site, spread them 75β100mm deep in garden beds β not against plant stems. Fresh chips are good mulch but high in carbon and temporarily deplete nitrogen. Add some slow-release fertiliser to the bed when spreading fresh chips.
Shade replacement
Removing a large tree often reveals how much shade it was providing. Brisbane's summer heat makes new shade valuable quickly. Fast-growing natives like brush box, lilly pilly, and paperbark can provide useful canopy within 3β5 years. Get advice on species that suit the space β the same mistake of planting the wrong tree in the wrong spot is common.
Garden opportunities
The cleared space often gets more light than the garden has seen in years. This is a good time to reassess garden beds, add raised beds, or reclaim lawn area that was too shaded to grow well.
