When You Need One and How We Handle It

The Brisbane City Council permit system for tree removal catches a lot of homeowners off guard. Most trees can be removed without any approval. But if your property is in a Vegetation Protection Order area, or the tree is specifically listed as significant, you need a permit before any work starts.

The fine for removing a protected tree without approval is significant — and BCC does enforce it. We check before every job. If a permit is needed, we handle the application so you don't have to navigate BCC's system yourself.

Brisbane Tree Removal Permits

When a permit is required

  • Tree is in a Vegetation Protection Order (VPO) area
  • Tree is a significant tree listed on your development approval
  • Tree is a protected species (some figs, native species in environmental zones)
  • Property is within a character residential zone with overlay controls
  • Tree is on Council land (different process — contact BCC directly)

When a permit is NOT required

  • Tree is on a standard residential block with no VPO overlay
  • Tree is dead, dying, or a declared invasive species (cocos palm, camphor laurel)
  • Emergency removal of a tree posing immediate risk to life or property
  • Pruning that doesn't significantly impact the tree's structure or canopy

Council Permit Questions

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Brisbane?+

Not always. Many trees can be removed without a permit. You need a permit if the tree is listed as protected under Brisbane City Council's vegetation management provisions, is within a Vegetation Protection Order (VPO) area, or is specifically listed on your property's development approval. We check VPO status as part of every quote.

How do I know if my tree is protected?+

Use Brisbane City Council's Property Search tool to check for VPOs on your property. Alternatively, call us and give us the address — we check VPO status as part of our standard quoting process.

How long does a tree removal permit take in Brisbane?+

BCC tree removal applications typically take 5–25 business days depending on complexity, the type of vegetation, and whether an arborist report is required. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we see the tree.

What happens if I remove a protected tree without a permit?+

Fines can be substantial — BCC can issue on-the-spot fines of up to $2,669 for individuals and up to $13,345 for companies for vegetation clearing offences. Serious cases can be prosecuted further.

Can I remove a tree on a boundary?+

If the tree's trunk is on your side of the boundary, it's your tree. If it straddles the boundary, it's jointly owned. You can generally prune branches that overhang your property without permission, but you cannot remove a shared tree without the neighbour's consent.

We handle the permit application for you — do I need to do anything?+

You'll need to sign the application as the property owner. Beyond that, we handle the preparation, the arborist report (if required), and submission to BCC. You just wait for the approval.
