What tree removal costs in Brisbane, and what drives the price

Quotes for what sounds like the same tree can range from $150 to $5,000 or more, and the spread is real rather than one arborist being greedy. Six things move the number:

• Height and trunk diameter. The single biggest driver. A 4m ornamental and a 15m eucalypt are different jobs needing different crews and gear.
• Access. If a truck can get within 20m and there is a wide side gate, the job is faster and cheaper. A long carry through a narrow gate adds hours.
• Proximity to structures and power lines. A tree in the open can be felled in one piece. A tree over a roof, pool or fence has to come down in sections with rigging, which takes far longer.
• Species and wood density. A bottlebrush cuts quickly. Ironbark and brush box do not.
• Whether a council permit is needed. That adds approval time and usually an arborist report at $250–$450.
• Stump grinding. Quoted separately, typically $80–$600 depending on stump diameter. Most people include it because the crew is already on site.

Council permits and Vegetation Protection Orders

Not every tree in Brisbane can simply be removed. Brisbane City Council protects some trees outright, and others are covered by a Vegetation Protection Order attached to the property. Removing a protected tree without approval carries a fine that dwarfs the cost of the removal.

What happens on the day

We confirm the time the day before and start between 7am and 7:30am, which is when it is coolest and quietest. The crew walks the site with you first, then sets up an exclusion zone — nobody, including you, stands inside it while the saws are running.

From there the tree either comes down in one controlled fell, if there is room, or is dismantled in sections and lowered on ropes if there is not. Branches are fed into the chipper as they come down, so the pile never gets away from us. Timber is chipped and taken away, or left as mulch on the lawn if you would rather keep it.
