Correct Pruning - Not Just Cutting Branches

There's a difference between a tree that's been pruned and a tree that's been cut at. Correct pruning removes branches at the natural branch collar, preserving the tree's wound response and minimising decay. Lopping cuts branches mid-span, leaving stubs that die, rot, and produce vigorous weak regrowth.

All our pruning follows AS4373-2007 - the Australian standard for amenity tree pruning. Our arborists know where to cut, how much to remove, and when to recommend removal instead of repeated pruning.

Types of pruning we carry out

  • Crown lift — raise the lower canopy to improve clearance over driveways, roofs, and footpaths
  • Crown reduction — reduce overall size while maintaining natural shape (not lopping)
  • Deadwooding — remove dead, dying, and diseased branches to reduce hazard
  • Formative pruning — shape young trees to develop good structure
  • Clearance pruning — remove branches conflicting with powerlines, buildings, or fences
  • Vista pruning — selective removal to open views while retaining canopy

Pruning Questions Answered

How much does tree pruning cost in Brisbane?+

Small tree pruning starts from around $150–$250. Medium trees $250–$550. Large trees $550–$1,200+. Price depends on tree size, number of cuts, access, and type of pruning required.

What is the Australian standard for tree pruning?+

AS4373-2007 (Pruning of Amenity Trees) is the Australian standard. It specifies correct cut placement, maximum wound size, and acceptable pruning ratios. All our pruning follows this standard — flush cuts and lion-tailing are not acceptable practice under AS4373.

How much can you prune from a tree at once?+

AS4373-2007 recommends removing no more than 30% of live crown in a single season for most species. Removing too much at once stresses the tree and can trigger rapid epicormic growth (water shoots).

When is the best time to prune trees in Brisbane?+

Most pruning can be done year-round in Brisbane's climate. Flowering trees are best pruned after flowering. Avoid heavy pruning during periods of prolonged drought or heat stress.

What is the difference between pruning and lopping?+

Pruning removes specific branches to a natural union point (collar cut), following AS4373. Lopping cuts branches mid-span, leaving stubs that die back, create decay, and produce weak regrowth. We prune — we don't lop.
