The answer is "it depends" — but it's easy to check. Here's the fast version.
Most trees don't require a permit
The majority of standard suburban trees in Brisbane can be removed without council approval. Dead trees, invasive exotic species (camphor laurel, cocos palms), and trees on standard residential blocks without VPO overlays can usually go without a permit.
When you do need a permit
You need a permit if the property is within a Vegetation Protection Order (VPO) area, the tree is a significant or protected species, or the development approval for the property specifies tree retention. The risk: fines up to $2,669 for individuals if you remove without approval.
How to check in 2 minutes
Go to brisbane.qld.gov.au, open the Property Search tool, enter your address, and look at the Vegetation overlay. If there's a VPO, a permit application is required before removal. Alternatively, send us the address and we'll check as part of quoting.
What if you need a permit?
The process involves an arborist report by an AQF Level 5 arborist, a completed application, and submission to BCC. We handle the whole process — report preparation, application, and submission. Approvals typically take 5–25 business days.
