Vegetation Protection Orders, significant trees, fines, and how to navigate the BCC permit system without wasting months on a rejected application.
Do you actually need a permit?
Many Brisbane homeowners assume they always need a permit to remove a tree. They don't. Most standard suburban trees can be removed without council approval. You need a permit if: the tree is in a Vegetation Protection Order (VPO) area; the tree is listed as significant on your development approval; the tree is a protected species in an environmental zone.
How to check VPO status
Brisbane City Council's Property Search tool (brisbane.qld.gov.au) shows overlays including VPOs. Enter your address and check the "Vegetation" layer. If you'd rather not navigate the planning system, send us the address and we'll check as part of the quote.
The fines are real
Removing a protected tree without approval can attract on-the-spot fines of up to $2,669 for individuals and $13,345 for companies. Serious or repeated breaches can result in further prosecution. Council does enforce these — particularly in high-VPO suburbs.
What a permit application involves
Most residential applications require: a written arborist report by a suitably qualified arborist (AQF Level 5 or higher); the completed application form; supporting documentation. We prepare the report and submit the application for you. Approvals typically take 5–25 business days.
When can a protected tree still be removed?
BCC will approve removal of a protected tree if it poses a genuine risk to life or structures (documented by an arborist report), is dead or dying, is a declared invasive species, or is in conflict with approved development. A well-prepared report with clear hazard documentation has a strong chance of approval.
