Council applications, insurance, development, pre-purchase β four situations where an arborist report is required and what the document actually contains.
What an arborist report is
An arborist report is a formal written assessment of a tree's condition, health, structural integrity, and risk profile. It's prepared by a qualified arborist and used to support decisions about tree management, removal, or protection.
When you need one in Brisbane
- Council permit applications for removing a protected tree
- Development applications where significant trees are on or near the site
- Insurance claims following storm damage or tree failure
- Pre-purchase property inspections to identify tree risks
- Body corporate or strata management decisions about significant trees
What qualifications are required?
Brisbane City Council requires reports for tree removal applications to be prepared by a suitably qualified arborist β typically AQF Level 5 (Diploma in Arboriculture). Reports from unqualified operators are rejected. Our lead arborist holds AQF Level 5.
What a report contains
A standard arborist report includes: tree identification and location, a structural condition assessment, hazard rating, health assessment, remaining useful life estimate, and management recommendations. For council applications, the report also addresses VPO requirements and the grounds for removal.
Cost and timeframe
Standard residential reports (single tree, council permit) start from $250. Development application reports cost more depending on scope. Most reports are completed within 3β5 business days of the site inspection.
