Brisbane's most common palm removal — why everyone's removing them, what they cost, and whether you need council approval.

Why cocos palms are Brisbane's most removed tree

Syagrus romanzoffiana (the cocos palm or queen palm) was widely planted in Brisbane gardens from the 1970s to the 1990s. It's now the most commonly removed ornamental tree in the city. The reasons are consistent: dense seed clusters that stain paths and driveways, fruit bats in large numbers during seeding season, heavy frond bunches that drop without warning, and a root system that spreads into garden beds and footpaths.

Do you need a council permit?

Generally, no. Cocos palms are an exotic ornamental species and are not protected under Brisbane City Council's vegetation protection provisions in most residential zones. Most can be removed without any approval. We confirm VPO status as part of every quote — just in case.

What does cocos palm removal cost?

Small cocos palms (under 3m): $90–$200. Medium (3–7m): $200–$450. Tall cocos (7–12m): $450–$850. Very tall (12m+): $850–$1,200+. Multiple palms on the same property are usually quoted as a bundle — the equipment setup cost is shared.

What makes palm removal different

Palm trunks are fibrous and don't chip efficiently through a standard wood chipper. The seed clusters are messy and need careful handling. Tall palms require rope access or elevated work platforms. We carry the equipment specifically for palm removals — not just a general tree crew.

After the palm is removed

The stump is harder than it looks — palm stumps are fibrous and can be ground out, but take longer than a comparable hardwood stump. We quote stump grinding for palms separately. Most customers include it to avoid the regrowth that can come from cocos palm stumps left in the ground.
