Two terms people use interchangeably β but they describe different things. Here's why it matters for your tree.
What tree trimming means
Trimming typically refers to maintenance cutting to control size and shape β removing small amounts of growth to keep a tree within a desired outline. It's often used for hedges, topiary, and ornamental trees where a specific shape is maintained. In a residential context, people often say "trim" when they mean "prune."
What tree pruning means
Pruning is the removal of specific branches for specific reasons β deadwooding, clearance, structural improvement, crown reduction β using correct cuts at branch union points. Pruning follows AS4373-2007.
Why the distinction matters
If you ask for "trimming" and an operator interprets that as lopping β cutting mid-branch for a tidy outline β you end up with stubs, epicormic regrowth, and an ongoing maintenance problem. Being specific about what you want prevents this.
What to ask for
Tell us the outcome you want: "I want clearance over the driveway," "I want to reduce the overall size," "I want dead branches removed," "I want it to look less dense." We'll tell you the correct approach and quote accordingly.
