A common and frustrating problem in older Brisbane suburbs. Tree removal isn't always the answer β here's the full picture.
Why this is so common in Brisbane
Brisbane's older suburbs were developed before the growth habits of many ornamental trees were fully understood. Poinciana, camphor laurel, moreton bay fig, and large eucalypts were planted 3m from the footpath in the 1960s. Now the roots are under the driveway and the footpath is lifting.
Your options
- Tree removal β eliminates future growth but the existing root system decays slowly
- Root barriers β for new plantings or to redirect growth from an existing tree
- Flexible paving β permeable or flexible paving systems that accommodate some root movement
- Path realignment β sometimes easier than dealing with the tree
- Grinding the surface roots β short-term fix, stimulates regrowth
What actually solves it
For most situations where an established tree is actively damaging paving: the tree needs to come out, then the roots near the surface are ground, then the driveway or path is relaid. It's a two-trade job β us for the tree, a concretor or pavement contractor for the driveway.
The council question
If the tree lifting your footpath is a street tree on Council land, contact Brisbane City Council β it's their responsibility. If it's a Council street tree that's damaging your private driveway or path, document the damage and contact BCC's infrastructure team. Council is generally responsive to these complaints.
