You don't need an arborist to notice obvious warning signs. Here's a simple homeowner inspection you can do twice a year.
Walk the perimeter
Start at the base and walk around the tree looking at: the root collar (where the trunk meets the ground) for any soil heaving, fungal growth, or cavities; the lower trunk for bark damage, holes, or wounds; and any signs of significant lean compared to previous inspections.
Look up from below
Stand under the canopy and look up. Dead branches are the most obvious hazard β they appear darker, without foliage, and often have peeling bark. Large cracks in the canopy, hanging branches (widowmakers), and areas of thin foliage warrant attention.
Check after storms
Always check trees after significant storm events. Look for: newly developed lean, partially detached branches (still attached but no longer supported), root movement near the base, and damage to the bark or trunk from impacts.
When to call an arborist
Any of these warrant a professional inspection: fungal growth at the base, new lean, significant cavities in the trunk, large deadwood in the upper canopy, sudden leaf loss outside normal seasonal patterns, or soil heaving near the base. An arborist inspection costs $150β$250 and gives you documented evidence either way.
