What canopy lifting achieves

Canopy lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to raise the height of the lowest point of the canopy. The canopy shape, density, and health remain intact — only the lower reach changes. Done properly, it doesn't significantly stress the tree.

The limits of canopy lifting

AS4373 recommends that the removal of lower branches shouldn't exceed around 30% of the canopy in a single season for most species. The goal is to preserve canopy proportion — a tree that has 60% of its total height in crown is generally healthier than one with 80% trunk and 20% canopy.
