Raising the lower canopy is one of the most common and least invasive tree jobs in Brisbane. Here's what's involved.
What canopy lifting achieves
Canopy lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to raise the height of the lowest point of the canopy. The canopy shape, density, and health remain intact β only the lower reach changes. Done properly, it doesn't significantly stress the tree.
Common reasons in Brisbane
- Driveway clearance β raise to 5m for vehicle access
- Roof clearance β remove branches rubbing or near the roof
- Footpath clearance β standard 2.5m for pedestrian access
- Light improvement β open the garden below the tree
- Visual access β see over a hedge or low canopy
The limits of canopy lifting
You can't lift a canopy that's already too large for the space. If the crown spread is 15m and the yard is 8m wide, raising the canopy height doesn't solve the fundamental size problem β crown reduction or removal may be needed. We assess and recommend before quoting.
How much can be lifted
AS4373 recommends that the removal of lower branches shouldn't exceed around 30% of the canopy in a single season for most species. The goal is to preserve canopy proportion β a tree that has 60% of its total height in crown is generally healthier than one with 80% trunk and 20% canopy.
Typical cost
Most suburban canopy lifts: $150β$550 depending on tree size and number of branches removed. Large trees with many substantial lower limbs: $550β$1,200+. We quote after assessing the tree.
