Two different processes, very different costs and disruption. Here's how to choose.
What stump grinding is
A grinding machine processes the stump down to wood chips 150β200mm below ground level. The bulk of the root system stays in the ground and decomposes naturally over 2β7 years. Fast, relatively non-disruptive, cost-effective.
What full stump removal is
Excavation of the entire root ball β stump and major roots β using machinery. The result is a void that needs backfilling. Significantly more disruptive, slower, and more expensive. Sometimes necessary, but rarely needed for standard residential situations.
When to choose grinding
- Lawn re-establishment over the stump area
- Garden bed replanting (after 6β12 months for soil nitrogen to stabilise)
- General yard tidying β trip hazard removal
- Most residential tree removal follow-up work
When to choose full removal
- Pouring a concrete slab or driveway over the stump area
- Structural foundations being laid nearby
- The root system is causing active structural damage that grinding won't stop
- Specific engineering or construction requirements
Cost comparison
Stump grinding: $80β$600 depending on diameter. Full removal: $400β$2,000+ depending on root system and excavation required. For most residential jobs, grinding is the right choice and a fraction of the cost.
