The royal poinciana is one of Brisbane's most common and most loved street trees. Here's what happens when one needs to come down.
Are poincianas protected in Brisbane?
Poinciana (Delonix regia) is not a natively protected species. Individual specimens can be subject to VPOs based on size and location. Most residential poincianas can be removed without a permit, but we check for each property β larger specimens in established suburbs sometimes have specific protection.
Why poincianas get removed
Common reasons include: the canopy has become very wide and overhangs multiple structures, surface roots have lifted paths or driveways, storm damage has compromised the structure, the tree is dying or diseased, or the property is being developed. Poincianas can reach a canopy spread of 15β20m β very wide relative to height.
What removal costs
Medium poinciana (5β8m, typical suburban specimen): $450β$900. Large poinciana (8β12m): $900β$1,600. Very large (12m+, wide spread): $1,600β$2,800+. The wide canopy creates a lot of green waste and often requires a larger crew.
Root treatment after removal
Poinciana stumps can produce sucker growth. Stump grinding plus herbicide treatment of any sucker growth is the recommended approach. We can quote both together.
