Jacarandas are Brisbane's most beloved street tree β but they're not always loved in private gardens. Here's what you need to know about removing one.
Are jacarandas protected in Brisbane?
Jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia) are not natively protected as a species under Brisbane City Council's vegetation provisions. However, like any significant tree, an individual jacaranda can be listed on a Vegetation Protection Order or a development approval. The size and location matter more than the species.
When you'd remove a jacaranda
Common reasons include: the tree is too large and messy for the garden size, root intrusion into pipes or paving, a hazardous lean after root damage, proximity to structures, or simply an estate decision to replace it. Jacarandas are generally fast-growing and can reach 15m with a wide spreading canopy.
What removal costs
A medium jacaranda (5β10m): $450β$900. A large mature jacaranda (10β15m): $900β$1,800+. Stump grinding quoted separately from $80. We check VPO status before confirming the quote.
Alternatives to full removal
If the tree is healthy but the canopy is simply too large, crown reduction (not lopping) can bring it back to a more manageable size. We'll recommend the right approach after seeing the tree.
