Fig trees are Brisbane's most challenging removal job and often its most protected. What you need to know.

Why fig removal is different

Fig trees (Ficus species) have some of the most aggressive root systems of any tree in Brisbane. Moreton Bay figs (Ficus macrophylla) can have buttress roots extending 15–20m from the trunk. Even smaller ornamental species have roots that invade pipes, lift footpaths, and undermine structures. Removal is slow, sectional work.

Are Brisbane's fig trees protected?

Moreton Bay figs are frequently individually listed on Vegetation Protection Orders due to their size and significance. Weeping figs and Port Jackson figs on private property may or may not be protected depending on size and location. We always check VPO status before quoting a fig removal.

The removal process

Sectional dismantling from the top down. Fig wood is heavy and the canopy is typically very dense. A large Moreton Bay fig removal is a multi-day job with a specialist crew. The root system below ground continues to decompose after the trunk is removed.

Cost range

Small ornamental fig (under 5m): $450–$800. Medium garden fig (5–10m): $800–$1,600. Large Moreton Bay fig: $2,000–$8,000+ depending on size, access, and permit complexity. These are significant projects that require proper assessment, not a phone quote.
