The cheapest quote can cost you thousands. Here's what you're actually risking with uninsured and unqualified operators.
Why cheap quotes exist
The tree removal market in Brisbane has very low barriers to entry. A ute, a chainsaw, and a social media page is enough to start taking jobs. No insurance requirement, no licence, no qualification check. Prices vary wildly because the underlying costs vary wildly β legitimate, insured, qualified operators have overheads that uninsured ones don't.
What happens when something goes wrong
A branch falls on the fence. The truck damages the driveway. A chunk of trunk lands on the pergola. With a qualified, insured operator: you make a claim on their public liability policy and the damage is repaired. With an uninsured operator: you pursue them personally, which is almost always fruitless.
The permit risk
An unqualified operator won't check VPO status. If your tree turns out to be protected and is removed without approval, the fine comes to you β the property owner β not the operator. Ignorance of the tree's protected status is not a defence.
What "insured" actually means
Ask for a Certificate of Currency, not just "yes I'm insured." The certificate shows the insurer, policy number, coverage amount, and expiry date. Outdated certificates and domestic policies that exclude commercial tree work are common ways uninsured operators claim to be insured.
The right question
It's not "who is cheapest?" It's "who gives me the lowest price I can be confident in?" Get three quotes from qualified, insured operators. The range will probably be much narrower than including unqualified operators.
