One of Brisbane's most problematic invasive trees β removal rules, costs, stump treatment, and what happens with the wood.
Why camphor laurel is a problem in Brisbane
Camphor laurel (Cinnamomum camphora) is a declared Class 3 pest plant in Queensland. It spreads rapidly, produces allelopathic compounds that inhibit other plants, forms dense monocultures in riparian areas, and is toxic to some animals. Despite this, it's planted on tens of thousands of Brisbane residential blocks.
Do you need a permit to remove camphor laurel?
In most cases, no. Camphor laurel is a declared pest plant and removal is generally encouraged. However, if the specific tree is subject to an individual VPO (Vegetation Protection Order) β which can apply to significant specimens β a permit may still be required. We check for residential properties before quoting.
Cost of camphor laurel removal
Camphor laurel is a medium-density hardwood. Costs are similar to other trees of equivalent size: $199β$450 for small specimens, $450β$900 for medium trees, $900β$1,800+ for large mature camphor laurels. The wood chipsell well as mulch and we typically remove it for use rather than landfill.
Stump treatment is critical
Camphor laurel stumps will resprout vigorously if not treated. Stump grinding removes the above-ground material, but the roots can still produce suckers. Chemical stump treatment immediately after cutting (basal bark or cut stump herbicide treatment) is recommended. We can arrange this.
What happens to the wood
Camphor laurel produces fragrant, attractive timber that is prized for furniture and turning. We separate larger sections on-site if requested. The rest is chipped for mulch.
