The difference isn't just vocabulary. Choosing the wrong one can damage your trees, void your council permit, and leave you exposed.
The qualification difference
An arborist holds formal arboricultural qualifications β at minimum AQF Certificate III in Arboriculture, typically AQF Level 5 for report preparation. A tree lopper is anyone with a chainsaw and a ute. There is no licence for tree work in Queensland β the difference is qualification, insurance, and technique.
The insurance difference
A qualified arborist carries public liability insurance. An unqualified operator may have no insurance, or insurance that excludes commercial tree work. This is your exposure β if something goes wrong on your property, you need the contractor's insurer to cover it.
The technique difference
Arborists prune to AS4373 β collar cuts, appropriate removal ratios, no flush cuts. Tree loppers make stubs. The stubs die, decay, and produce vigorous water shoots. A lopped tree requires constant management. A correctly pruned tree heals and needs less intervention over time.
The council permit difference
Council arborist reports must be prepared by a suitably qualified arborist (typically AQF Level 5). A report prepared by an unqualified operator will be rejected. If you're removing a protected tree and need a permit, only a qualified arborist's report will get it approved.
How to tell the difference quickly
Ask: "Can you send me your qualification certificate and Certificate of Currency?" A qualified operator sends both within minutes. An unqualified one either can't or makes excuses.
