Tree Removal Northside - What the Job Actually Involves

A plain look at what drives the price, which trees cause the most trouble up north, and when council gets involved.

Why Two Identical Trees Get Very Different Quotes

People ring up and describe a tree by its height, expecting that to settle the price. It rarely does. Two 12 metre gums, same species, same condition, two streets apart, can be a $700 job and a $2,400 job.

What separates them is everything around the tree. Can a chipper truck get within 20 metres, or is it a barrow run down the side of the house? Is there a pool, a shed, a neighbour's carport, or a colorbond fence in the drop zone? Is there room to fell it in one piece, or does a climber have to take it apart from the top down?

That last point is the big one. Felling a tree whole takes minutes. A sectional dismantle, where each limb is cut, rigged, and lowered on a rope so nothing hits anything, takes hours. Most tree removal Northside work on established suburban blocks is the second kind.

So when you compare quotes, check they are describing the same method. A number that looks too good often assumes access that does not exist.

The Trees That Cause the Most Trouble Up North

The northern suburbs were largely built out between the 1960s and the 1980s, and the planting choices of that era are now sixty year old trees sitting three metres from a slab. A few species come up again and again.

  • Large eucalypts and spotted gums:- the signature Northside tree. Tall, heavy, and prone to dropping limbs in summer without much warning. Frequently protected, so check before you plan anything.
  • Cocos palms:- planted everywhere in the 70s, now a weed species. The fronds and fruit are heavy, messy, and a genuine hazard over a driveway.
  • Camphor laurel:- nobody planted these on purpose. They self-seed, grow fast, and the roots go looking for stormwater pipes.
  • Poinciana:- beautiful, wide, and shallow rooted. The surface roots lift driveways and paths, and the limb unions are weak.
  • Jacaranda and silky oak:- usually fine, though older specimens get brittle and shed limbs.
  • Brush box:- a common street tree. Solid, but they get big, and clearance over a roof becomes an issue.

Species changes the job more than people expect. A bottlebrush comes down quickly. A dense ironbark of the same height is heavier, harder on chains, and slower to process, and the quote reflects that.

When You Need Approval, and When You Do Not

This is the part that catches people out. Whether you need approval has almost nothing to do with the tree and everything to do with the address.

Brisbane City Council protects vegetation through planning overlays, including Vegetation Protection Orders. Some Northside streets are almost entirely covered, others nearby have nothing. A dead tree, a dangerous tree, and a tree you simply do not like are treated differently, and there are exemptions, but they are narrower than most people assume.

We check the overlay on your address before quoting. If approval is needed, we prepare the arborist report and lodge the application. Budget 5 to 20 business days for a decision, and $250 to $450 for the report. Once approved, the removal is usually scheduled within 3 to 10 business days.

One thing worth knowing about Tree Removal Northside jobs on the outer edge: the northern boundary of our service area crosses out of Brisbane City into Moreton Bay, and the two councils do not have identical rules. We confirm which one your property sits under before advising you on anything.

Removing a protected tree without approval is expensive. Do not take a neighbour's word for it, and do not take a tree lopper's word for it either. Get it checked.

Emergency Tree Removal Northside

Storm season runs roughly November to March, and the northern suburbs get hit properly most years. The damage follows a pattern.

It is seldom a clean snap. More often a limb tears out at a weak fork and stays hung up in the canopy, which is far more dangerous than one on the ground because nobody can predict when it comes down. Or the ground saturates, the root plate lifts, and a tree that was vertical on Friday has a noticeable lean by Sunday. A leaning tree with cracked soil on the uphill side is not a wait-and-see situation.

What to do: keep people and cars out from under it, photograph everything before anything is cut (your insurer will want that), and ring 0474 011 120. If there are powerlines involved, call Energex on 13 19 62 first and stay well back. No arborist should be near a live line before the network operator has dealt with it.

After a big blow we triage by risk rather than call order. If your tree is on a roof or over a footpath, say so on the phone.

Getting an Accurate Quote Without a Site Visit

Most Tree Removal Northside jobs can be priced from photos, provided the photos show the right things. Send us these and you will usually get a firm number the same day.

If it is a complex removal or a permit job, we will come out and look properly. Free, and no obligation. We will also tell you when a tree does not need removing. Pruning or a crown lift is cheaper for you and better for the tree, and a mature shade tree on a Brisbane block is worth keeping if it is structurally sound.

Tree Removal Northside Questions

How much does Tree Removal Northside cost?+

From $199 for a small tree under 5m with clear truck access, up to $1,800 and beyond for a mature eucalypt beside a house. Access is the variable people underestimate. A tree that could be dropped whole in an open paddock has to be dismantled in sections on a suburban block, and that is labour, not equipment. Stump grinding is separate at $80 to $600.

Do I need council approval before removing a tree?+

It depends on the address, not the tree. Brisbane City Council protects vegetation through overlays including Vegetation Protection Orders, and parts of the Northside are heavily covered while neighbouring streets are not. We check your address before quoting. Removing a protected tree without approval carries a significant fine, so it is not worth guessing.

Can you remove large and hazardous trees?+

Yes. Large removals near structures are done as a sectional dismantle: a climber works down the tree taking manageable pieces, rigging each one and lowering it under control rather than letting it fall. It is slower than felling, and it is the reason a big tree near a roofline costs what it does.

Do you offer emergency tree removal services?+

Yes. For a tree on a house, across a driveway, or hanging over a walkway, call 0474 011 120 rather than using the form. If powerlines are involved, contact Energex on 13 19 62 first and keep everyone well clear until they have made it safe.

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?+

No, it is quoted as a separate line so you can decide. It runs $80 to $600 depending on stump diameter and how deep you need it ground. Doing it while the crew is already on site is cheaper than bringing a machine back later.

Are you fully insured?+

$20M public liability, with a Certificate of Currency available before we start. Ask any arborist for this. It takes seconds to send and it tells you the cover type, the amount, and the expiry date.

Do you clean up all branches and debris after the job?+

Yes. Timber is chipped and carted away, or left as mulch if you want it for garden beds. Larger logs can be cut to firewood lengths and stacked if you ask. The site is raked and swept before we leave.

How long does a removal take?+

A straightforward small tree is an hour or two. A large eucalypt over a house with poor access can take most of a day with a full crew. We give you a realistic window when we quote, and we confirm the start time the day before. Crews generally start between 7am and 7:30am.
